The pristine of four planned acts of Shadows forward the Vatican starts with a flashback to 1996: On a benignity mission in Africa, an eminent Vatican ecclesiastic named Dellerio is gunned down through unknown assailants even as his protégé, James Murphy, watches helplessly from an airborne helicopter. Shattered by the bloody incident and disenchanted with the Ecclesiastical Authority, James goes ~ward to abandon his priesthood in Italy and go to his native Chicago to get to be a doctor. Now, fourteen years later, he's back in Rome without interrupti~ the invitation of Cristoforo, his good in the highest degree friend from his days with the Church, who says that he knows the kind of really happened in Africa. But in the sight of they can meet, Cristoforo is violently attacked, leaving him in a clump, and the outrage propels James to begin an investigation into a deadly cabal that spans continents and decades, peradventure involving some of the most influential members of the Catholic Church.
